How well do you sell what you do and how convincing are you that your product or services are the best? In other words, how good is your “Elevator speech” (An elevator speech is a clear, brief message or “commercial” about you. It communicates who you are, what you're looking for and how you can benefit a customer, company or organization. It's typically about 30 seconds, the time it takes people to ride from the top to the bottom of a building in an elevator.)

Walking through Stop and Shop and you bump into an old friend from high school. Anyone at any time can be a future customer so how comfortable and more importantly confident are you of your business? It should be second nature. Never waste a chance to sell yourself! You never know who may need your services. Or who is near by listening!! WE have picked up clients that were eavesdropping.  You should ALWAYS have a business card handy but the best way to sell what you do is the impact you make when you present what you do face to face.  A future customer will remember your business if you are passionate about it.

Example: Hey Betty, how are you?  …….ME? Well, I am a landscaper. I really wanted to be outdoors and I really enjoy making homeowners enjoy their yards.  Nothing makes a home look better than a well-manicured yard. I also offer tips on what kinds of things to plant to really spruce up your yard. The work is hard but it is rewarding.

In comparison to:

YEAH! I cut grass. It is tough but the money is good.

Even if you currently hate what you do, until you change careers never downplay your job. People talk!!!! At some point this person may be approached for a landscaper and all they recall is that you don’t like your job and you are only in it for the money.

So create a speech, keep it short and to the point. Add why you are proud to do it and I guarantee people will remember you!! If you are in the sales business do not be afraid to mention that you are having a sale or if you are attending an event… LET THEM KNOW! Do not hide these factors.

Pride in what you do will make your business memorable!!

One more thing… Promoting yourself to strangers might be difficult but what about your family and friends?? I am always surprised how friends and family either don’t know what you do or understand it.. LOL! Would you rather they think of you as my nephew Aaron or my nephew the electrician!! To make this work you have to be the one to place that bug in their ear…  feel weird talking about yourself? NO PROBLEM!

Actually, in my opinion the best way to get that bug in their ear is through a third party. Let your significant other bring up how hard you work at……  Let them stir the pot!!!

Or share what you do on social media maybe you can even post CLEAR PICTURE of what you do!!  Money is green and it doesn’t matter who it comes from so get the Elevator speech ready and let everyone know what you do!!

1)WHO ARE YOU? What is your name and your businesses name.

2)WHAT DO YOU DO? Be very clear and nice and short

3) HOW DO YOU DO IT?  Do you run your business out of a van, from a tent...

4)WHAT DO YOU DELIVER? Solution based outputs that can be measured as success

5)WHO YOU WORK WITH? What kind of industry do you work with.  (HEALTH, MUSIC, ENTERTAINMENT)
